Back in September 2014, word came through all the usual foodie channels that Los Angeles, specifically Santa Monica, would be getting the first (traditional outlet) Dunkin’ Donuts in Southern California. Here it is eight months later and I just made my first visit there. What is so ironic (or sad) is that my new doctor’s office is just across the street. And after a physical (which included getting on the scale) made me fast for the morning, I was hungry and decided to treat myself to a bit of research across the street at Santa Monica’s new-ish Dunkin’ Donuts. There was a steady stream of people in and out the door. It’s located on a prime corner at 12th and Wilshire.
The one and only time I’ve ever had a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee was somewhere in the Midwest in June 2010. Matt and I had purchased our first tour van in Boston, and drove it across the country over four days, alternating driving duty. We made a late afternoon stop at Dunkin’ Donuts to refuel and I got a cup of coffee while Matt got a soft drink. That night, I wasn’t able to fall asleep until about 3am. That was my first taste of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, but I knew it wouldn’t be my last. I now limit my coffee intake to the morning hours.
Founded in Massachusetts, Dunkin’ Donuts has been making donuts since 1950 and in fact offers 52 varieties! So although the breakfast sandwiches looked good, and were being ordered ahead of and behind me, today I ordered a blueberry cake donut and a cappuccino. And then I noticed the Munchkins (donut holes) so I got an order of 5 to bring home to Matt. The cappuccino was lovely, and not just because I was fasting and therefore this first cup of coffee at 11am was sorely needed. Paired with the light and lightly frosted blueberry donut, I was very happy. I am declaring my donut and coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts in Santa Monica as my best bite of the week!
