Our friends at Dearly Departedtours have been getting quite a bit of press lately due to the sudden death of pop star Whitney Houston at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Of course they’ve added the hotel to their roster of Hollywood celebrity death sites. We’ve been on their tour and it is great, and shows you the darker (under)side of Hollywood in a very respectful fashion. I admit to also having a fondness for both historic and celebrity cemeteries. Whether it be the famous resting grounds of cowboys in Tombstone, Arizona or the Hollywood Forever Cemetery which backs up to Paramount Studios, I’m fascinated.
So my latest adventure took me to the Westwood Village Memorial Park, which is really quite hidden among the high rise buildings off Wilshire Blvd. My tour guide buddy Sherrie agreed to show me the final resting place of Marilyn Monroe, which I’ve been wanting to visit for over a year now. What did we find but a beautiful Valentine bouquet delivered by the Immortal Marilynfan club, lovingly placed in front of her crypt. The empty crypt to the left…belongs to none other than Mr. Hugh Hefner! Also resting here are Natalie Wood, Farrah Fawcett, Rodney Dangerfield (“there goes the neighborhood”) and psychic Rita Kaslov, offering palm readings for a reasonable $5. Only in Hollywood…wait, we were in Westwood!
