My best bite of the week is actually not one bite but several bites from the same breakfast plate! Nick’s Café on Spring Street in downtown LA has been in business since 1948. Reviews on YELP are mixed but my fellow tour operators at Esotouric highly recommend the breakfast fare at Nick’s so I finally found an opportunity to try it. There is one large U-shaped counter and several outdoor tables, but I opted to belly up to the bar and make some new friends. Since moving to LA I somehow don’t mind dining alone, especially at a counter.
At the top of Nick’s breakfast menu is Nick’s Famous Ham N Eggs, so that’s what I ordered. I chatted with my new friends, two couples from Alhambra, while we waited for our breakfast plates and enjoyed our cups of coffee. The coffee was good, and even better it’s FREE on weekends! Even though my plate doesn’t look pretty, trust me when I say it tasted pretty. A flaky biscuit was placed aside a big piece of ham, nicely scrambled eggs that were better than some I’ve had at much fancier places and some really good hash browns. My new friends, regulars, told me to ask for the homemade apple jam, which was perfect spread on the biscuit.
I’m happy to declare my Ham & Eggs (and hash browns and biscuit) my best bite of the week. To help you plan your visit, here’s a few tips: Nick’s Café is cash only, parking is free and plentiful, and lastly get there early on weekends or else you’ll be waiting under this little tent for your table (or bar stool).
