We Angelenos are a funny group. Visitors to Los Angeles comment how we appear to be so health-conscious and yet there’s a donut shop or cupcake shop on every corner. I for one have never professed to be in that category (perhaps my friends think I SHOULD be more health-conscious) but I know plenty of people who are. I follow bloggers, dieticians, holistic health coaches and yoga teachers on Facebook. I know I should be eating less sugar, but you know what…sugar makes me happy. I especially love a good donut.
I have been hearing about Glazed Donut Bistro on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood for months. But the long lines. And the long drive from LAX. I knew I was going to have to work a visit into a day of research in that part of town, and that’s exactly what I did. When I walked in at 10:30am on a Thursday morning I had the full attention of the kind and very friendly staff. They talked me through the choices in the glass case and encouraged me to come back on weekends for more fancy varieties. After thinking long and hard, I chose the Banana Fritter, and asked that it be cut in half to save for later. I was offered complimentary dipping sauces and tried both the vanilla and the sea-salt caramel (pictured). The only thing that would have made this fritter more heavenly was if it was served warm. But alas, I suffered through each moist, delicious banana-flavored bite, just perfect paired with that caramel dipping sauce. And so this lovely little donut that goes by the name of fritter is being declared my best bite of the week!
