On Saturday we attended the first annual LA Bacon Festival at the Petersen Automotive Museum. It was sponsored by DRINK:EAT:PLAY the same fun group responsible for the 80’s Prom Party and the Cupcake Challenge. Next up on their LA calendar is the April 6 Beer Festival. But let me get back to the bacon. This event featured some of the best bacon bites in town. From sweet to savory, from burgers to sticky buns, about 40 restaurants featuring some of the best bacon in Los Angeles were on hand offering their best bites.
Some standouts were the banh mi sandwiches from Mendocino Farms and the watermelon & pork belly skewers from Malibu & Vine (at the Malibu Golf Club). Our good friends the Grub Gals were serving Crack Bacon on a Stick from Grub Restaurant. There was of course bacon mac & cheese, bacon ice cream and maple bacon scones. The two longest lines were for Starry Kitchen’s bacon, tater tot and cheese dish and also for Slater’s 50/50. With the line about 100 deep we opted not to wait but just to watch the people trying to eat their ¼ burger dripping with bacon and cheese!
My favorite bite of the day came from Cliff’s Edge: a chocolate-bacon cookie dipped in a cup of spiked milk that tasted like a White Russian. I went back for another cookie only to find they had run out. Sad face. It left such an impression on me that I’m declaring that round and crispy chocolate-bacon cookie my best bite of the week!
