What or where is Avalon, you wonder. It’s the one-square mile city on Santa Catalina Island! Avalon became an incorporated city in 1913, which means that 2013 marks the 100th Anniversary of this island-city. Avalon is hosting official celebrations during the week of June 20-26 with events including a festival, concert and fireworks at the island’s most recognizable landmark, the Catalina Casino (which now houses a ballroom, a theatre and museum). If you’ve always wanted to visit Catalina Island, why not make this the year you do it?
You can only get there by sea or air. The Catalina Express offers daily trips out of Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point and is about an hour ride, each way. From strolling the harbor shops and restaurants to sunbathing on the beach to exploring the island by golf cart or bicycle, there’s plenty to do for the whole family. The Catalina Golf Course, said to be the oldest golf course in Southern California built in 1892, is now a nine-hole course. As an added bonus, if you’re tired of all the Los Angeles traffic, you may appreciate that Avalon is the only city in California that regulates the number and size of vehicles allowed. There’s a 16-year waiting list to own a car on the island! For a bit of small-town charm not far from the big city lights, enjoy a delightful visit to Avalon, on Catalina Island!
