For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to go shopping at The Citadel Outlets, Los Angeles’ only outlet center. But for some reason or another, I just never got out there. Then the Travel and Tourism Marketing Association (TTMA) announced their August luncheon to be held in the VIP Lounge of The Citadel Outlets. So off I went on a very hot day to do some industry networking and explore some of the 125 outlet stores at The Citadel off the I-5. Getting to the Citadel Outlets was easy, as the shopping center is recognized by the huge Assyrian Castle Wall. Ground broke at this exact location in 1929 for the Samson Tire and Rubber Company, with the wall surrounding the plant designed to feature heraldic griffins and bas-reliefs of Babylonian princes.
After several name changes and a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, The Citadel Outlets opened in November 1990 as a mixed-use project. In addition to the outlet stores and carts, there are office buildings, a food court and a Double Tree Hotel. The website does mention a shuttle to The Citadel Outlets, with service running only from Anaheim area hotels. If your tour group stops by, you can expect a personal greeting and some discount coupons. Of the special events taking place at The Citadel, mark your calendars for 12th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The Marketing Manager told our group that this year they are going to have the biggest tree in the USA…that should be a sight to see!
