After learning about The Donut Man from Facebook and then seeing his shop featured on an episode of The Next Food Network Star, I decided it was time to take a drive out to Glendora to sample the goods. While I tried my best to get there in the month of July for the fresh strawberry-stuffed donuts, that didn’t happen; when I saw that the specialty for August was their fresh peach-stuffed donuts, I figured that was the next best thing.
Heading Northeast out of Los Angeles, we found The Donut Man on the original Route 66. We of course got one of the peach donuts and then got an old-fashioned glazed just for fun. We learned from The Next Food Network Star candidates that The Donut Man uses potato flour as the base of his donut batter. We felt it made for a less sweet, but certainly still delicious, donut. There were a steady stream of customers, most ordering the fresh fruit donuts, but there was a wide variety of donuts for every taste. In business more than 40 years, you can get your donuts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I will definitely get out there next July when strawberries are back in season. Or if I can’t wait that long, I’ll head back out when the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip donuts are in season!
