I finally had dinner at Jon & Vinny’s! For those of us who follow LA’s foodie scene closely, we’ve been aware of two chefs named Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo who first came on the dining scene with the opening of Animal on Fairfax, with its focus being on meat dishes. Then the dynamic duo opened Son of a Gun, which is a nautical-themed eatery with a strong emphasis on seafood. Then they teamed up with the awesome Ludo Lefebvre and became a triple threat with the opening of Trois Mec, Petit Trois and Trois Familia. Jon & Vinny’s, which is an Italian eatery, opened in early 2015. It took me until December to get there, and it was worth the wait. I was invited by a special friend to celebrate my birthday at the Chef’s Counter early on a chilly Tuesday night. When we walked in it was packed. It was wonderful to be greeted at the door by Emily, a lovely girl who used to take care of us at Mozza2go on our Sites & Bites tours. Turns out her boyfriend is a sous-chef at one of the restaurants mentioned above, so she made the move to be part of the Jon & Vinny family.

My friend S had heard good things about the braised meatballs, and I of course wanted to try the LA Woman pizza. So we added in the zucchini and arugula salad and were good to go. The Chef’s Counter proved to be a cozy and interesting spot to dine as we got to see all the action taking place in front of us. The wood-burning pizza oven kept us warm since we were near the door which was constantly in use by diners coming in and out. The meatballs were what you might call plus-size, but for good reason and served in marinara sauce with ricotta and buttery bread. I tried to eat just half, but ended up eating my whole share, a full meatball. The LA Woman pizza was beautiful as you can see, with a dollop of burrata cheese and basil leaf on each slice. We shared an order of Italian wedding cookies, and were surprised when Emily brought over a bombolone (an Italian donut) as a parting gift, which I brought home to share with Matt. The crowds are packing Jon & Vinny’s for a reason. Good food and good fun. I will be back soon to order off their breakfast menu!
