Playa Provisions is a newly opened and much anticipated eatery right in my own neighborhood! I’m sure all the Playa del Rey residents and beach-goers are as happy as I am that Top Chef Alum Brooke Williamson opened shop in the neighborhood. If you know Brooke’s name it may be from the fact that she and her husband Chef Nick Roberts already own and operate two other popular South Bay gastropubs. Hudson House in Redondo Beach, known for a fabulous Taco Tuesday and The Tripel, just down the street from Playa Provisions on Culver Boulevard. Their new Playa Provisions is going to house several different food concepts under one roof, and I can’t wait to try them all. However, since Playa Provisions opened a week ago I’ve already been twice, both times for breakfast. But I will be back for lunch and dinner and ice cream and when I can’t stand it any longer I’m going to get one of their red velvet Shark Attack cupcakes.

Today I want to tell you about the very special biscuit I had on my first visit. A simple, warm, flaky biscuit (buttermilk, I’m not sure?) that came with a side of butter AND a spoonful of salted Dulce de Leche. Look closely, can you see the salt flakes sitting atop the gooey caramel? They were there and they were perfect! I tried a bite of biscuit with butter and it was tasty; but what I really wanted was to slather the Dulce de Leche on every bite of the biscuit. So I did, and then I licked the spoon. And wished I had another spoonful. I first discovered this flavor sensation while working in South America, and since then it has become my favorite flavor, right up there with chocolate. My first breakfast at Playa Provisions, a biscuit with salted Dulce de Leche, has happily made my best bite of the week. I sure hope this menu item is going to stick around for a while.
