Dinner at Terra at Eataly in Century City

I first visited the new Eataly in Century City when they opened in November 2017.  A culinary combination of walk-up food counters, self-serve markets and sit down restaurants, this place has something for everyone.  Since my first visit, all the sit-down restaurants are now up and running with the newest and most beautiful, Terra, located on the third floor rooftop with sweeping city views.  I had been hearing wonderful things about Terra so we decided to check it out for ourselves. Terra means earth in Italian and foods on the menu center around the wood-burning grill, where seasonal ingredients get the treatment.  The space includes a garden, outdoor bar, fire pit, indoor lounge, and more.  We opted for an outside table on a warm summer afternoon and it was glorious!

The menu at Terra is broken down as many restaurants are doing of late.  Encouraging you to share small plates but pointing out the bigger, shareable plates too, with meats and sides getting a shout-out.  The four of us opted to share a Charcuterie Plate after one being delivered to a nearby table grabbed our attention.  We were not disappointed.  We also got a basket of bread with a generous pour of olive oil.  We never had to ask for more, even though there were four of us indulging.

I ordered my usual glass of Prosecco but Matt opted for a cocktail with ingredients grown in the  garden at Terra.  I particularly liked that the wine bottles and water bottles for that matter, were readily available in these big decorative tubs.  This one was adjacent to our table.

Three of us ordered pasta dishes, all different.  The fourth ordered the lamb chops and shared bites with us.  If you are a meat eater, this is a delicious, well-prepared and beautifully presented dish.  But I was still very happy with my pappardelle pasta with a ragu bolognese.  Pappardelle is a wide, flat noodle that comes from the word “papalle” translating to “gobble up.”  I enjoyed every bite.

We discussed moving down to the ground floor for dessert at Eataly’s walk-up gelato counter and maybe a few tantalizing pastries.  But in the end, I convinced everyone that we should try the Gelato Cart.  This was one of the things that attracted me to Terra when first I read about it.  You can see from the picture, the cart holds a heaping bowl of sweet cream gelato along with various toppings.  For the $12 price tag we got 3 big scoops of gelato, chocolate sauce, hazelnuts, small bits of broken cannoli shells, a sprinkle of sea salt and of course cherries on top!  Four spoonfuls later, our bowl was devoured.

As we wandered back through Eataly’s Italian Marketplace to make our exit, we noticed that the gelato counter was packed!!  I for one was glad we had decided to enjoy the Gelato Cart upstairs at Terra.  Thinking back, the entire dining experience was exceptional and I’m looking forward to a return visit to Terra at Eataly in Century City!
