That was the theme of The Taste, sponsored by the Los Angeles Times over Labor Day weekend. I attended Monday’s picnic at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and ate and drank my way through four hours of fun. I also caught demonstrations by two popular and talented ladies in the LA food scene. Nancy Silverton, co-owner of Osteria Mozza/Pizzeria Mozza/Mozza2go put together an Italian-style picnic. She told the crowd she keeps only a few tools in her kitchen, with one being a hand-held micro-planer (for zesting or grating lemons). Zoe Nathan is newer to LA’s food buzz but has made a name for herself with Rustic Canyon, Huckleberry Café, Sweet Rose Café and Milo & Olive. She shared her story of wanting to work in a pastry kitchen so she could make friends in San Francisco.
I sampled a variety of sweet and savory bites. The best sample I had today was my long-awaited sandwich from the Grilled Cheese Truck, and it did not disappoint… macaroni and cheese stuffed inside a grilled cheese sandwich. My favorite beverage was the sparkly white Quint Sangria; perfect on a summer day. Oh and let me not forget the cantaloupe/honey/basil shaved ice treat from Ice Ice Shavie. Admittedly, I ate and drank way too much. But I’d do it all over again!
