Follow the Yellow Brick Road…all the way to Sony Studios in Culver City where The Wizard of Oz was filmed at the original MGM Studios. Recently my friend Liz was visiting from Portland, Oregon to celebrate her birthday. We decided to take a tour of this famous studio, that has morphed from Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) to Columbia/Tri-Star to Sony Pictures Studios. Frankly it’s a bit confusing to me, but suffice to say that many, many beloved movie stars have walked these famous grounds over the past 88 years making movie history.
It was a two-hour walking tour that brought some of those movies to life. There were a few famous vehicles parked on the lot, including the Ghostbusters vehicle. We were invited into the Thalberg building that houses a few of the Oscar statuettes that Columbia Pictures won over the years. If you are a fan of game shows, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are both filmed in front of live audiences at Sony. Picture taking was limited during most of the tour, and we were only allowed onto a few sound stages. However, Liz and I agreed the highlight of the day was discovering Premiere Props on Washington Blvd. in Mar Vista, where you can peruse and purchase costumes and props straight from movie magic.
