Sunday morning brunch is one of my favorite weekend activities! Today Matt and I used a voucher that I had purchased through Travelzoo for brunch at the trendy Melrose Avenue eatery Red O. If you follow Bravo’s many food shows, you may remember the name Rick Bayless. He was crowned the winner of Top Chef Masters in August 2009, and he created the menu that features authentic Mexican and light California fare.
We waited in a long line just to get in the door, noticing that almost everyone else had their Travelzoo voucher in hand. But once inside, we were seated at the most cozy, comfortable little nook and our Mexican feast began: fresh fruit agua frescas, champagne cocktails, awesome chunky guacamole, goat cheese tamales, my favorite chilaquiles, coffee and of course a Mexican chocolate-salted tart with a raspberry sorbet (which they substituted for the salted caramel ice cream, which apparently they ran out of…at 11am???) Although seemingly a strange combination, it worked nicely.
The décor was pretty, the space was comfortable, the service was friendly and not overbearing, the food was tasty and we agreed that we would definitely make a return visit. I was curious about the origin of the name…found out the actual restaurant owners are guys that met years ago while working at the Red Onion in Redondo Beach…so Red O is a tribute to that original restaurant.
