Being Thankful

Last week Matt and I donated every seat on our tour bus to a group of ladies in Santa Monica. No we didn’t find these guests shopping on the Third Street Promenade. I had met them through Junior League’s Daybreak Program at Ocean Park Community Center. They are living in transitional housing, which really means they don’t have their own homes. They are homeless. And yet through programs at OPCC they are learning about entrepreneurialism and creating their own destiny and income streams. I was invited to speak at one of their Thursday evening workshops presented by the Junior League. There was a baker, a textbook publisher and me.

The participants had so many questions and were genuinely fascinated by my story that we came up with the perfect follow-up…to invite them on a tour so they could experience it. Thanks to the staff at OPCC, a drawing was held and two weeks later 11 ladies plus one staff member boarded our bus bound for Hollywood. The ladies were shy and yet open. They listened to my commentary and asked questions. They didn’t wander off as some guests do. They loved the food samples and thanked our vendors, especially Grub, Greenblatt’s and Mashti Malone who generously donated their food tastings. I found out there were many interests in the group and that the ladies came from all over the US. There were lots of hugs and lots of thanks, including this special stone that I received from Sharon. But the biggest thanks that day came from me and Matt. Thanks that we had a strong foundation and the support from our friends and family to follow our dreams and open our own business. We are thankful.
