Beloved pastrami

Save the Deli! This is a book I read cover to cover and salivated the whole way through. The author David Sax had traveled east to west coast sampling pastrami sandwiches (and lots of other yummy deli food!) and declaring an East and a West Coast winner of the beloved pastrami sandwich. The winner on the East went to Katz’s New York deli and the winner on the West was declared to be Langer’s Deli. Well, you may know by now that my heart belongs to Greenblatt’s pastrami sandwich, with the special crunch of that double-baked rye bread!

In fairness (and the name of research!) I decided to make the trek out to MacArthur Park with my tasting partner Terry to see what all the fuss was about. Truth is I’d been wanting an excuse to get out to Langer’s even before I read the book. And I have to say it was a darn good sandwich, thick cut pastrami and topped with a pickle-filled Russian dressing. The place was packed, with a line out the door, even in a dicey neighborhood. So I invite you to do your own taste test and decide for yourself. Greenblatt’s is still my #1 but perhaps there’s room for #2.
