Dining in LA-My Best Bite of the Week: Salty Roll
DineLA Restaurant Week rolls around twice a year, once in January and again in July. More than 300 area restaurants participate in the two-week event, offering special prix fixe menus for lunch, dinner or both. I always look forward to making reservations at places that I’ve not been to before. Most restaurants offer 3 courses for the special price: appetizer, entrée and dessert. This summer’s dineLA Restaurant Week fell during a very busy time for us here at TOURific Escapes and I almost didn’t make it out anywhere. In the end, I was able to dine at two Santa Monica restaurants, and both on the same day! I had lunch at The Dining Room at the Hotel Shangri-La and dinner at JiRaffe.
While all of my selected courses were fresh, delicious and unique, I have to say the very BEST bite was from the bread basket at Hotel Shangri-La. The bread was a small square roll, soft inside and crusty (but not too hard) on the outside with just the slightest hint of salt. It was honestly the best piece of bread I’ve had in a long time if not ever. I asked the server to find out if it was made in-house or ordered from a local bakery. Turns out it came from Melrose Baking Company, which used to be located on (wait for it) Melrose Avenue. Their baking ovens have since relocated to Santa Fe Springs. You can bet I’ll be making a drive down there the first chance I get. For this reason I’m declaring this Salty Roll my best bite of the week!
PS. I want to add that I ate my roll before I could take a picture of it!
