Dining in LA~My Best Bite of the Week: Jean Harlow cupcake
Today I had the pleasure of joining a very special tour that gave tribute to the life and times of movie star and original Blonde Bombshell Jean Harlow.
The tour was hosted by my friend Elisa who created LA Woman Tours to share her love of Los Angeles and the unique musicians and actors who called Los Angeles home. The Harlow in Hollywood Tour was offered this particular weekend since the Platinum Blonde died unexpectedly at the age of 26 on June 7, 1937. Born Harlean Harlow Carpenter in Kansas City, Missouri, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11. She took the name of her mother (Jean Harlow) as her stage name and eventually became a leading lady for MGM studio. She made her first movie Hells Angels in 1930 and died during the filming of Saratoga.
Our small tour group traveled in luxury between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, mesmerized by stories and photographs shared by Elisa and her co-host Darrell Rooney who is one of the top experts and collectors of all things Jean Harlow. We took pictures, we asked questions, we toasted Jean with champagne. And then there was the visit to the former Chasen’s in Beverly Hills. Now a Bristol Farms, for 60 years Chasen’s was a popular restaurant and a hangout for Hollywood stars. You may remember stories of Liz Taylor having Chasen’s chili shipped to her in Rome while filming Cleopatra. Ok, back to my tour. Elisa had special-ordered cupcakes to share with the group. They were chocolate-chocolate chip with a marshmallow type frosting and atop each one was the letter J. They were delicious! I can only hope that Jean Harlow allowed herself a bit of chocolate now and again. This was a perfect way for me to celebrate the new star in my life, and for that reason I am declaring this cupcake my best bite of the week!
