Dining in LA-My Best Bite of the Week: Dan Tana’s

Dan Tana’s is a restaurant that has been on my “list” for a very long time.  I’m Italian and I love Italian food.  Since becoming a Hollywood Tour Guide 5 years ago, historic restaurants like Dan Tana’s have become of interest to me.  This almost-50-year-old restaurant has been on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood since November 1964, just a few doors down from the famed Troubadour, the nightclub that helped launch the careers of performers like Elton John and the Eagles among others.   I was thrilled to share dinner at Dan Tana’s recently with my Tour Guide pal, Elisa, the owner of LA Woman Tours.  Our experience was everything we expected and hoped it to be!   Known for being the ultimate Hollywood hangout, we enjoyed great food, dim lighting, red leather booths, exceptional (maybe a tad bit snooty) customer service and the potential celebrity factor.  If there were any celebs dining there that evening they were well-hidden behind oversized shades.  One tip:  you will not be seated until your entire party is present.

My meal was basic and delicious.  I really just wanted to try their pasta.  I asked our charming waiter Igor what came in the Half and Half.  Turns out, half ravioli and half spaghetti, both covered in meat sauce.  Sold.  I added on a green salad and a soft piece of bread from the basket and I was good to go.  The salad was such a good way to start, fresh, flavorful and took the edge off my hunger.  My entree was a very generous portion of your traditional pastas with the most amazing meat sauce.   I ate every bite of that wonderful spaghetti and a few ravioli, bringing the rest home for next day lunch.  Unfortunately the dish didn’t photograph well, but take my word for it, if you’re ever going to spend $24 for spaghetti, Dan Tana’s is a special place to do it.  I am declaring my Italian dinner at Dan Tana’s in West Hollywood as my best bite of the week.  Buon appetito!
