Dining in LA-My Best Bite of the Week: The Proud Bird

Dining in LA-My Best Bite of the Week: SusieCakes Red Velvet Cake

This week my best bite isn’t so much about the food, but the restaurant itself.  The Proud Bird has been around since 1965, and was opened by a WW2 pilot/aviation buff.   Located near El Segundo just east of LAX, The Proud Bird sits in perfect view of the south approach runway.  I went to a banquet there years ago, and heard people talk of going to brunch for family gatherings, but never thought much about the place until I heard they were scheduled to close November 21.  With Matt being in the aviation industry, I thought it would be a treat to enjoy a sunset dinner there to really soak up all that The Proud Bird represents.

We perused the long hallway of photographs which is somewhat of a tribute to the evolution of modern aviation.  Then we enjoyed a stroll around the yard, where Matt patiently explained the functions and history of several of the display planes (some authentic, some replicas).  There is an outdoor patio, but we opted for indoor seating where I think there isn’t a bad seat in the house.  Because we arrived before 6pm we were presented with the Early Bird menu.  We both got the 3 course prime rib dinner for $18, a significant savings off the regular menu.  The food was solid and substantial, and we loved watching the planes come in for landing with a birds-eye view.  As we walked out the hostess offered us souvenir shopping bags with the Proud Bird logo so we’ll have something to remember this unique little spot.
