Where to find the pizza that Ellen ordered for the Oscar’s
If you watched the 86th Academy Awards, you know one of the evening’s highlights was when host Ellen DeGeneres ordered pizza for the attendees (well, the first few rows of A-listers anyway). It was their lucky break when Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria at 7353 W. Sunset Boulevard answered the call from the show’s producers that evening. Owner Edgar showed up to the Dolby Theatre thinking he was delivering pizza for some hungry backstage crew and instead got the surprise of his life when Ellen whisked him onstage in front of approximately 3,500 famous guests. Edgar made an appearance on the Ellen show the very next Monday (along with Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Jared Leto) where Ellen gifted him a $1,000 gratuity, of which $600 had been collected from the Oscar’s audience. Since then Edgar and his pizzeria have been receiving calls and visitors from around the world.
So of course being the curious (and hungry) Hollywood tour guide that I am, I just had to pay this place a visit. It’s certainly not the closest pizzeria to the Dolby Theatre, it’s in a strip mall down near The Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard, but luckily it does have its own small parking lot. Since I was solo, I just wanted a single slice of pizza. There was an entire menu of pizzas by the slice, so when I ordered just a simple cheese pizza slice, the cashier said it would take 15-20 minutes. What? I asked which one was ready now, and he said none of them. Ok, I was already there so I was just going to have to wait. When he brought the large yellow triangle box out to me, I thought there must be some mistake. And then when I opened it, I saw why it took so long to make. Each “slice” is really an oversize slice, cut into 4 manageable pieces. I ate 3 pieces on the drive home and am saving the last for Matt to try. Was it the best pizza I’ve ever had? No, but certainly not the worst. It was a pretty traditional thin-crust cheese pizza, something you might expect from a place called Big Mama’s & Papa’s.
By the way, if you want to follow Edgar on Instagram, you can find him at @OSCARPIZZA2014 and I know this from all the signs up around the pizzeria!
