Mother’s Day 2020
Mother’s Day 2020 will be unlike any other, considering we are still in the midst of the Covid-19 social distancing restrictions. We regularly hear this period called our “new normal” but whether our actions of recent months are only temporary or will be implemented for months to come, is anyone’s guess. So here are a few ideas for celebrating your mom this year.
Will you schedule a Zoom call with your family? Or maybe schedule a more private FaceTime or Skype call? Will you get your mom a decorative face mask to add to her collection? Check out the new cat-themed masks at Crumbs & Whiskers on Melrose Avenue. Maybe you’ll want to start Mom’s day with donuts…one for her, one for you. The Original Farmer’s Market is still open for take-away business and I’m happy that longtime vendor Bob’s Donuts is still cranking out their excellent donuts for happy customers.
If you want to put a gift basket together for Mother’s Day, Fancifull Gift Baskets, which also happens to be located on Melrose Avenue in the Larchmont neighborhood, has something for everyone. They have many customized baskets to choose from, but if you’d rather choose your own goodies to send a truly personalized gift, that’s an option too. You can either shop in store (wearing your new cat mask) or call the team at Fancifull and they’ll do the shopping for you, and get your basket on its way. If Mother’s Day means flowers in your family, Fancifull also carries a beautiful assortment of flowers, sourced from downtown LA’s very own flower mart.
Because I’m the resident sweet tooth here at Sites & Bites headquarters I know all the best places in Los Angeles to help your mom celebrate sweetly. Our partners at John Kelly Chocolates are still selling truffle fudge bites at both locations, Santa Monica and Hollywood. If your mom craves more sweet and savory baked goodies like cupcakes, cookies, cakes, quiche, breads and more, be sure to visit the friendly faces at Sinners and Saints Desserts. Their welcoming shop on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice carries a variety of both regular and gluten-free versions, and all delicious, I can personally attest. If you are in the mood for colorful and delicious French macarons, look no further than Jin Patisserie, located in Culver City. They have about a dozen different flavors in a darling mini-macaron size, plus a variety of petite cookies and chocolates that wrap up so nicely for Mother’s Day or any day, really.
If Mother’s Day means pizza, I was very excited to learn our partners at Mozza2go have re-opened for take-out business. You can’t go wrong with any of Nancy Silverton’s special sourdough crust pizzas, but my personal favorite is the Bianca with three white cheeses and a touch of truffle oil. Follow that up with a cup of their Butterscotch Budino with salted caramel and you’ve got a feast fit for a Queen!
With this heat wave that’s arrived in Los Angeles this week, you may prefer to treat your mom to a scoop or two of ice cream from Mashti Malone’s in Hollywood. Serving unique ice creams and sorbets since 1980, Mashti and his team are still open for take-out and delivery. I have been craving their Pistachio Almond and Turkish Coffee. Well, those and Black Cherry and Madagascar Vanilla too. So many delicious flavors to choose from.
Wherever and however you choose to celebrate your mom, be sure to take your mask off before taking a bite of any of the above goodies. Looking forward to the day when we can celebrate with our friends and family in person, sharing a meal together…with lots of hugs. Happy Mother’s Day 2020!
