Shopping at the Melrose Trading Post

If you are looking for something fun and inexpensive to do on a Sunday morning, head on over to the Melrose Trading Post.  The Fairfax High School parking lot at the corner of Melrose and Fairfax Avenue becomes a giant flea market every Sunday, rain or shine, from 9am to 5pm.  For 15 years, the market has been a fundraiser for Fairfax High School art students, and in 2013 they raised their admission price by a dollar, now charging a $3 per person entry fee.  I recently had friends in town who were shopping for a college student’s apartment so I suggested the MTP even though I’d never been before.  Did we ever hit the jackpot!

We found row upon row of all kinds of fun treasures:  jewelry, clothing, furniture, paintings, artwork, books, handmade goods, garden items and more.  Items range from brand new to gently used to antique, something for every budget.  There was even a food court!  We had just come from brunch at Grub Restaurant so weren’t hungry.  But I did score a beautiful framed watercolor painting of a field of sunflowers, priced at $15.  The frame alone was worth more than $15!  Before I could ask if it was mis-marked, I said I would buy it.  My friends also scored a few treasures for previously mentioned college apartment.  Even if you don’t spend a dime at the flea market, perusing the more than 250 vendor booths will give you endless hours of entertainment value for a mere $3.
