Some Like It Hot at The Del

From my earlier blogs you may know that the first weekend in August was spent with the Immortal Marilyn fan club, as we honored the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death. I wasn’t able to attend every event due to my work schedule; one that I was disappointed to miss was a visit to the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego. Why was this location special in MM’s career? This is where she filmed Some Like It Hot in 1959 with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. So I decided to end my “official” summer with a visit to The Del over Labor Day weekend.

The Del was just as breathtaking and regal as the photos show it to be. So as not to miss anything, we walked the hotel property inside and out to get a sense of every little nook and cranny. Although it would have been fun to dine near the pool, we opted to walk a few short blocks to the downtown area of Coronado and had both lunch and ice cream. Back at the hotel, I dragged Matt into every gift shop, spending the most time perusing the Marilyn memorabilia. And then we found the historical exhibit of the hotel itself, which was fascinating. A walk along the gold-flecked beach confirmed why Coronado was named America’s Best Beach 2012. A few photographs later, and I was content to head home with my own memories of The Del.
