The Best Bite I Ate This Week: Fried Plantains AKA Tostones
This week was a little more difficult for me to choose a best bite since it was my birthday week and I had a few “extra” desserts and treats along the way. But I’ve chosen a bite that brought me back to lazy days along the beach in Costa Rica while a crew member for Princess Cruises. Here’s the story…
Saturday morning we took a drive out to Griffith Park to enjoy the sunshine and a Farmer’s Market. Matt has a new app for his phone called TV Food Maps, and it pointed us to a place featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that was just down the road in Glendale: Mambo’s Café, a delightful Cuban restaurant. When I saw tostones on the menu, I just about flipped and ordered them right away. Like plantains they are made with green bananas, though they are savory and crunchy, rather than soft and sweet. They are perfect for dipping in garlic sauce (pictured here) or black bean dip.
Big thanks to Matt, the app, Mambo Café and the chef! This was a favorite bite that brought me right back to that December day in 1998 when I had tostones for the first time with friends on a beautiful beach while in Puntarenas, Costa Rica.
