Where to find the best red velvet in Los Angeles

f you ask someone who grew up in the southern states, red velvet has been around for a long, long time.  I first laid my eyes on a red velvet cake in the movie Steel Magnolias back in 1989.  Do you remember that blood-red armadillo-shaped groom’s cake at Julia Roberts’ wedding?   Yep, red velvet.  However, I can’t pinpoint exactly when I tasted my first red velvet bakery item, but I’m pretty sure it has been in the last 12 years since moving to Los Angeles.  Now that I lead food and chocolate tours, I have tasted more than my share of red velvet goodies across Southern California.

Doughboys on West Third Street was given a nod by Oprah several years ago as the best red velvet cake on the west coast.  Customers flock to The Griddle Café on Sunset Blvd. to enjoy their delightful red velvet pancakes.  If you ask any cupcake shop, from Crumbs to Sprinkles and everyone in between, red velvet is their best seller.  Nothing Bundt Cakes and Kiss My Bundt offer what else…red velvet bundt cakes!  Sinners and Saints in Venice offer gluten-free red velvet options.  And just when you thought you’d seen it all, head to Essential Chocolate Desserts in Culver City this weekend (Jan 25-27) for their Red Velvet Blowout!  Scones, brownies, cupcakes, truffles, beverages, ice cream, and so much more.  All dedicated to red velvet…and all so good!!
